Travel truly is the gift that keeps on giving, and Livia McKinney, a senior at Auburn University, was able to experience that first hand with LeadAbroad on our GO Barcelona program. After experiencing on the summer of a lifetime, Livia returned with more memories, lessons, and friendships than ever before. Studying abroad truly is what you make of it, and she made sure to go home with no regrets. "It was about embracing the chaos, making the most of each moment, and realizing that the best experiences often come when you least expect them. The trip taught me to say yes more, take risks, and shed any fear that might hold me back from fully enjoying life."
Livia shared how she knew this opportunity was a privilege, and thought of her family often because of it. "When I shared my experiences with them, I made sure to convey not just the highlights—like the beautiful sights or the new friends I made—but also the more personal moments, the ones that truly shaped my journey. I wanted them to know how the experience was changing me, how their gift had opened my eyes to new perspectives and helped me grow in ways I couldn’t have predicted. Their role in this journey made me appreciate every moment that much more." Studying abroad is so much more than new memories made. The growth we see our students endure is not only heartwarming, but inspiring. Students choose to study abroad for many different reasons. Livia's family gifted her with a study abroad experience in hope that it would deepen her understanding of the world and help her grow into a more independent and well-rounded person. Valuing education and new experiences, she was encouraged to step outside of her comfort zone, and Barcelona allowed her to do just that! "It became more than just exploring a new place—it was a journey of self-discovery, building resilience, and gaining confidence in ways I never imagined."
If there is one thing Livia could tell anyone on the fence of studying abroad, it's to go for it. "Don’t wait for the “perfect” time or let fear hold you back. The experience will push you outside your comfort zone in ways you can’t predict, and you’ll learn so much—not just about the world, but about yourself. Yes, it can be intimidating, and things won’t always go as planned, but that’s part of the adventure! You’ll make memories that last a lifetime and discover new strengths you didn’t know you had."
