Whether it was on a shorter program like DIRECT or a longer one like GO, I was never lacking someone to go on a new adventure with or explore the cultures around us. "I learned so much this summer, the main things being that there is so much power in creating relationships, the students can teach you just as much as you can teach them, and that there is something to be grateful for everyday," says Victoria Schmer, an intern on our DIRECT Florence and GO Rome programs this summer. Victoria made the most special memories working as an intern.
Victoria Shirley, an intern on DIRECT Cape Town 2023 and 2024, said "This opportunity was transformative, teaching me essential skills like public speaking, navigating unfamiliar environments, and leadership. One of my most memorable moments was watching students conquer their fears as they bungee jumped on the Garden Route. Seeing their shift from nervous anticipation to exhilaration and pride was unforgettable. If I had to sum up my experience, I’d say it was about breaking boundaries, personal growth, mentorship, and getting to have once in a lifetime experiences through it all. Given the chance, I’d gladly do it all over again—it was truly one of the best experiences I could ask for."
"As an intern for DIRECT and LEAD Cape Town this past summer, I got the chance to discovered my resilience and my passion for serving others. This opportunity allowed me to work on my communication skills, my ability to support others in high-pressure situations, and taught me how to take initiative. I can say for certain - I came back from Cape Town a better person!" - Chloe McCoy
