Boldly Breaking Through Boundaries: Campbell's Summer in Cape Town

Updated: Nov 18

Hi! My name is Campbell Holmes and I am a junior at Ole Miss! My major is Broadcast Journalism with an emphasis in Sports Media and a minor in Sports Administration.

Being born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, I knew I wanted to go to college somewhere close to home because of the amazing relationships I have with both of my parents and my sister.

I also grew up, and still do, deal with anxiety. It’s a part of my life every day and I’m not going to lie, it definitely is a struggle now and then.

I always knew that I wanted to create a good community of people wherever I went. I decided to go to Ole Miss, I went through recruitment, ran home to the perfect home, Phi Mu, and I have never looked back.

Going to Ole Miss, joining Phi Mu, and being able to become a sports anchor for the school has been an absolute dream. Not only have I found people that will be in my life forever, but I have also found myself.

I am no longer a shy, introverted girl. I am outgoing, bubbly, and down for any adventure - and that's exactly why I chose to go on LeadAbroad's DIRECT Cape Town program in South Africa this summer!

Am I a little nervous? Duh. Do I still find myself shy at times and anxious about the littlest things? Absolutely.

But am I excited to go alone, meet new people my age from across the country and create those new friendships that’ll last a lifetime? Yes!

I am excited for this opportunity and I can’t believe it is coming so soon. To my future new best friends, I can’t wait to look back on our two weeks together and smile so big.

I’ve never been on a study abroad trip, nor even really been out of the country other than on a cruise, so this is definitely an adventure for me.

To the people that are reading this and are nervous about it being a “first” of theirs, just take the jump!

We can do it together!

If I’ve learned one thing by being in contact with LeadAbroad these past few months, it is that they are truly wanting what is best for you. While deciding where to go for my trip, a girl from LeadAbroad, Abbey, led me in the direction of going to Cape Town, and I can never thank her enough.

But, seriously, take that jump. If I can, I promise you that you’ll be perfectly okay, more than okay even.

LeadAbroad has already shown me love and positivity, and I cannot wait to see it shine throughout my trip to Cape Town in summer 2024!
